Since we're on the topic I thought I'd share....I found a box set of the trilogy from 1973 at a thrift store for 75 cents.

I like LotR. Haven't read Hobbit, but really, even LotR was a struggle for me to persevere with. I did, and the story was worth it, but not really up for doing it again. Maybe if it were written at a faster pace.

Clearly, I don't like LotR as much as Telford. The stegosaurus thing was pretty neat. My only problem is that the building projects took up so much space and they couldn't even keep it. What's the point of making something if one is just going to have to destroy it? Still, expression of fandom and creativity are good things.

Admittingly I've never read the Trilogy before. Guess I'll have to put that on my to do list since I have the books now.

I'm still debating on seeing it. It is gonna be one of three parts. Movies like that I feel have to 'end' at a good enough point to make people wanna go see the next parts. So I may end up waking for the other parts to come out.

I've read the LotR books before, but not the Hobbit.

I've went to see the Hobbit in digital 3D this week, so this is my own unsophisticated and unenlightened thoughts on the movie.

I thought it was going to be one of two parts not one of three parts, as I vaguely remember hearing it would be split into two parts before. And the ending of this movie seemed to get the characters halfway to their destination.

I liked seeing Martin Freeman as Bilbo, having recently rented the movie treatment of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, he has a kind of bewildered everyman or (everyhalfling) quality that works as Bilbo starts his adventure.

There were some nice scenes of Gandalf in Bag End, including one with a chandelier that made me chuckle to myself that even after all those years he still hadn't learned to duck. laugh.gif

I haven't read the novel treatment of the Dwarves, but I liked the movie treatment of them, they each had their own personalities and backstories. I liked the hidden menace they gave to Smaug and the build up of the Dwarf Prince vs the White Orc, although I was a little bit thrown off, (personally) by the Goblin King having Gollum's face. On a much larger body, granted.

Having seen the film in 48 frames per second and digital 3D, it didn't bother me at all. The picture seemed even more detailed and seemed to "pop" off the screen more, but that's 3D for you. Lol.

The climactic battle of the film and the arc of Bilbo's character growth were pretty satisfying, though I realized it wasnt the full story and there were adventures still to come. I liked the scene of Gandalf and a few familiar faces in council in Rivendell, especially since having foreknowledge of certain character's actions added to the tension, I thought. And I thought the scenes with Rhadgast the Brown were a pleasant bit of whimsy.

At the end, I almost found myself shouting at the screen, when Bilbo was saying that "I think the worst is behind us." You as an audience member just know that as soon as any main character says that, things are about to get a whole lot worse. wink.gif biggrin.gif

So, my opinion of the film is I give it two (hairy) thumbs up and a rokon.gif

I thought the movie ended up at more than a good enough point for me to see the next part, with one antagonist beaten back (however temporarily), but an even bigger antagonist still to come.

Hmmm.

I thought it a truly brilliant - quite brilliant - film, but I did sit and think.... eh?? Am I in the wrong film at a few points.

Purists of the book will be driven mad!
