What Are You Listening To? Options

Thorne, what kind of veneus does your alternative marching band play? That's an awesome concept. Any videos by chance? I'm working with a local middle school band right now on a composition project. It would be really fun to show them a grown-up still enjoying their instrument in a fun and not stuffy setting. =D

All of your groups had such unique sounds. Pretty cool the diversity there.

Also, this made me go back and see what I used to do. Was trained classically, so spent the whole rest of my life trying to break out of that. Found the Irish/Celtic made good use of formal training and improv skills. *sigh*

Was scanning through the music you listed, Thorne. Dungeon Master's Girlfriend, haha! Been there before, always interesting. That one made me chuckle.

Had not heard of her no, but I have her version of Tattoo playing as I type this. Definitely has an interesting sound, I like it. I admit it, I am impressed.

Valya, the Irish/Celtic is nice. Every so often I will get in the mood to listen to that style of music, I will have to have that ready.

For some reason at work last night I was in the mood for reggae, something mellow and relaxed. Though given it was a high stress day, that kind of makes sense.

Oh man, that Dungeonmaster's Girlfriend song was going to be the centerpiece of a concept band I wanted to form called The D20 Rollers to go perform at gaming and nerd conventions. We'd be in costume and all the songs would be about gaming. Never happened though.

I'm generally not into the mellower reggae. It's like Chicago blues, it just all kind of sounds the same pattern all the time. I like ska though. I listen to Bill Callahan (Smog) or Songs: Ohia when I want to relax.

I have to say, I like the idea. Songs about gaming seem to go pretty well, actually. There is a comedian named Stephen Lynch who made a song about D&D, kind of poking fun at it, but still kind of amusing. Not sure if you are familiar with him?

I can agree it all sounds pretty similar. However, I work in a kitchen, poorly run, and with no real management. A high stress environment, made worse by that fact. The reggae keeps me calm, and relaxes me. And when my coworkers start acting up, or when the couple that works there starts swearing and shouting, I turn it on and turn it up, to make them calm down.

There are some songs that get stuck in my head. The one below is one of them.

They sound like Best Coast and Camera Obscura. All their official videos look like they're shot in lovely 8mm too.

I also am digging this band on Drag City that sound like early Who or Kinks recordings. Mostly just one dude playing all the instruments except drums.

He even plays guitar in the high style like Pete Townshend in his youth. I picked up their fourth record but I heard the other ones are really good too.

Lastly, there's a new Sleater-Kinney album, but honestly after the super-group Wild Flag, I miss the sound of Carrie and Janet playing with Mary Timony and Rebecca Cole, so I've been listening to this over and over. That record is just a perfect album to me... I get new favorites over time.

Oh boy, music.

To be honest, I barely keep track of specifically who I listen to. Low attentiveness to bands and such. Musically I tend to bounce around in genre a lot. String or electronic instrumentals, dash of classic rock, etc. I tend to go on kicks of musical soundtracks, too - anything I can put a mental image to.

Anything with nice drumming - mm, drums and bagpipes - is my heaven.

I prefer the music, really. Haven't watched anime in years, and that one was just odd. It is how I used to find new shows, though. Some of those artists can be pretty creative in their covers, and occasionally I'd stumble across any number of related references. Win-win-win, in most instances.

Today, I've been delving deeply into the Alan Lomax archives which are all available online. Just finished this radio show about nonsense songs:

Lomax is an utterly charming host and ethnomusicologist to spent his life trying to record for posterity the breadth of American folk music (and a lot of European and Caribbean music as well). Pretty fascinating and entertaining stuff. This particular episode has a bunch of old puns and knock knock jokes and I think it's hard not to smile listening to it.

This is a real good one too, about dance music all over the world...
